Hallucigenia's Title Screen
The game starts from Aya's perspective in an inescapable, mostly barren room. The dream world is accessed through a black book on her bed, her appearance changing outside of reality.
After completing certain tasks in Aya's dream world, Aine becomes a playable character. Aine's dream world is very similar to Aya's dream world, but is grayscale due to her colorblindness.
Unlike most fangames, Hallucigenia lacks background music, and has only a handful of sound effects.
In older versions of the game, Aya's effects were referred to as Colors.
Aya enters her dream world from the black book on her bed. When in the dreamworld you are still Aya, but her appearance changes. Some theorize that this is her desired appearance.
Aine enters her dream world by sleeping on the bed. She lost her right arm, and she is also colorblind that she sees things in grayscale, either in reality or the dream world.
You can do actions with certain effects by long pressing Z.
Holding Z without an effect makes Aya's body distort.
|Switch||Aya has a switch on her head. Holding Z pulls the switch, changing her eye color.|
Slithering / Zuruzuru
Aya has something pink slithering behind her as she walks.
Aya carries a scythe, allowing her to kill NPCs.
Dune / Sand Hill
Aya's body wrapped in a dune. Holding Z makes her tuck her head inside it and return to the nexus.

Aya carries a rifle on her back, allowing her to kill NPCs.
Half of Aya's body is missing, allowing her to pass through narrow entrances. Holding Z switches the side of her body that is visible.
Rocks / Stones
Aya turns into a couple of rocks, making her unable to move but hiding her from chasers.
Aya has three legs.
Aya has a manhole cover on her head. Holding Z makes her dive underground, hiding her from chases but not making her invulnerable; the effect also allows her to pass through low entrances when underground.
Aya is drawn in ASCII art. Holding Z makes the upper part of the string displace, Aya fixing it afterwards.
Aya is (seemingly harmlessly) sliced horizontally into 5 parts, each moving around as she walks. Holding Z makes her drop the pieces down on top of each other.
Aya's hair becomes messy. Holding Z makes her try to straighten it, but it goes back to its previous form.
